Who is an Embodied Woman?

You've probably heard the word "embodied" floating around wellness circles, yoga studios, and podcasts. But what does it actually mean?

To me, an embodied woman is someone who lives in her body, not just with it. She listens to her body's feelings - connecting with her body to receive information from, rather than an object to be judged.

She Tends to Look Like Someone Who:

  • Notices when she's hungry, tired, or tense, and responds without guilt

  • Feels her emotions in her body - the tight chest, the knot in her stomach - and treats them as useful signals

  • Moves because it feels good - not to burn calories or change her shape

  • Can say no without over-explaining, because she can feel her boundaries

  • Takes up space comfortably in her own skin - in a room and conversations

  • Embraces her body's changes (aging, pregnancy, cycles, illness) as a sacred part of her natural journey

Why It's Not Always Easy

Many women grow up learning to self-objectify by looking at themselves from the outside: How do I look? Am I too much? Not enough? When you're busy monitoring how your body appears, it's hard to notice how it feels. Stress, busy life, and a never-ending to-do list, can leave many of us living disconnected from our bodies and in our heads - from the neck up!

The good news is - Embodiment is a skill that you can learn to cultivate anytime, anywhere.

Simple Ways to Become More Embodied

  • Do a daily body check-in.

Pause for one minute and ask: What do I feel right now? Where do I feel it?

  • Breathe slowly.

A few deep breaths into your belly can bring you out of your head and into the present.

  • Move in ways you enjoy.

Walk, stretch, dance in the kitchen. Skip the 'should' and follow what 'feels good'.

  • Honor your basic needs.

Eat when you're hungry, rest when you're tired, and drink some water. Small acts of listening nourishes and builds trust with yourself.

  • Spend time barefoot outside.

Feeling the ground, the air, and the sun is an easy way to reconnect with your senses.

  • Practice saying 'no'.

Notice the body's 'yes' and 'no' before your mind talks you out of it.

  • Be kind to your reflection.

Try gazing into a mirror and say kind words of appreciation and compassion to yourself. Develop the loving connection with who you are and the journey you have been on so far.

Takeaway

Being embodied isn't about being perfect. Some days you'll feel deeply connected, and other days you'll be running on autopilot. That's human. What matters is the gentle practice of coming back to yourself, again and again.
